Yang Qian was born in Sichuan Province in 1959 and studied oil painting at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, receiving a Bachelor in 1982. He continued his studies in the United States, graduating from the University of Florida with a master's in art. He held several solo exhibitions in the United States. He participated in additional exhibitions including "Character Art in the 1990s" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Austin, TX, and "Art at the End of the Century" at the Vanderbilt Art Museum in Centerport, NY. He has also received awards from The Leslie and Frances Posey Foundation and Oyster Bay Art.
