Zhang Daqian (1899 - 1983), Chinese lithograph of an Ape. An original lithograph, ink and color on paper, the subject is Hanging Gibbon over the Autumn Stream on German etching paper, by the artist in pencil Dai C. Chang, together with the edition numbers 86/125 written in pencil, the embossed publisher's sea,l and various printer's seals. Artist Zhang Daqian probably created this print from memories of his birthplace, Sichuan province, famous for its deep mountains. The backdrop is filled with dense forests and layered mossy rocks, recalling Sichuan jungles. A playful gibbon kicks an old tree with its right leg. In China, the gibbon is believed to be affectionate, undemanding, and companionable. It also held a special symbolism for Zhang, who associated himself with the nickname Yuan, which sounds like the Chinese word for monkey.
